Synthetic hair dye ingredients like ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, bleach, para-phenylenediamine (PPD) can irritate the skin and cause allergic contact dermatitis -- burning, itchy scalp, neck, eyelids, and ears.  Hairdressers may develop hand dermatitis that may spread further up the arms and body.  Once sensitivity is shown, it may be lifelong.

The American Cancer Society reports that the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has concluded that workplace PPD exposure for hairdressers is "probably carcinogenic," based on the data for bladder cancer.  PPD's carcinogenicity is "not classfiable" for personal hair dye use.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration form parts of the National Toxicology Program (NTP).  The NTP has not classified hair dyes for its potential to cause cancer.  However, some chemcials that are or were used in hair dyes have been classified as "reasonably anticipated to be human carcinogens."

More About Henna......

How does the process work?

Call or email me, Michele, to schedule a remote consultation.

Can I get the color I need?

Henna is a reddish dye.  Indigo is mixed with henna to achieve a range of colors from deep to copper red and all shades of auburn, brown, brunette, and black.   Henna is great for covering gray.  Cassia is added to brighten dull or graying blonde hair with pale golden tones.  Herbal tea colors from blue, red, black, to yellow can be added to your custom hair dye.  I can also do color in foils for a more subtle look.

How long does henna last?

Plant based hair colors last as long as synthetic hair colors.  New regrowth typically shows after 4-6 weeks.

Can you lighten my hair with henna?

Henna is a deposit only color and won't lighten hair; however. greyer or lighter hair has more room to achieve various colors.

How long does it take?

I use an ancient method of dyeing hair.  There are no synthetic chemicals used to speed up the process. The standard time is 2-6 hours depending on the desired color.

What's the difference between store bought henna and your henna?

Store bought henna is designed to give you a color at speedy rate. They may contain fillers, additives, adulterants, and mineral compounds that can clog your skin and irritate the scalp.  Store bought henna often works like a semi-permanent color, fades quickly, and might not even work. To avoid problems, hair coloring is best done by a professional.  A professional hair stylist knows how to mix the plant extracts to achieve the color you want.  I use only the purest henna and healthiest ingredients from Mother Earth!
